Interview with Spring Awakening Director Amina Omari
![]() |
See what Director Amina Omari has to say about our upcoming production of Spring Awakening in this tell-all interview!
What is Spring Awakening about?
"Spring Awakening is about a group of teenagers in 1890's Germany who have been raised in ignorance of sex. As the play begins, they’re just hitting puberty, and each of them has to struggle through in their own way.
The show is adapted from a play written in 1892 by Frank Wedekind, who was a fearless critic of bourgeois values in his time. Because the play was so frank about sex and sexuality, it was banned for 20 years and then condemned as pornography when it was finally performed. This musical adaptation, with music by Duncan Sheik and lyrics by Stephen Sater, translates that fearless spirit into a powerful pop-punk score and a story that’s still as rebellious as it was in 1892."
What made you want to direct Spring Awakening?
"I just fell in love with the music. I must have listened to the soundtrack at least two hundred times before I even started working on the show. The music spans an incredible emotional range, from the high-adrenaline punk numbers to unearthly-beautiful choral pieces. It really brought me back to the high highs and the low lows of being a teenager - it’s a time when every emotion is intensified, and your mood can swing from the depths to the peaks in an instant. It’s a difficult time, but it can also give you some of the most memorable and beautiful experiences of your life."
What were some of your inspirations for the direction of this production?
"Because the show skips back and forth between the period setting - 1890's Germany - and the character’s internal rock-show of the music numbers, I looked far and wide. Gustav Klimt (painter, "The Kiss") and Walt Whitman (poet, "Leaves of Grass") were particularly inspirational for me; they were both working at around the same time as Wedekind, and they, too, challenged the sexual restrictions of their society. Gustav Klimt, in particular, was a teenager at the same time that these characters were teenagers; I like to imagine that one of these characters could have grown up to be Klimt. Of course, I also drew from the rebellion of contemporary music, including the punk, grunge and riot grrrl scenes of my own youth.
Most of all, I took my cues from the language of the play; the number "Touch Me" ended up being my way into the entire show. In it, the characters try to describe sex in their own words, drawing on the metaphors they have available to them. Nobody has told them what sex really is; all they can do is describe it with a patchwork of mythology, religion, nature, dream, music, and metaphor. What they end up with is a strange collage, dense and beautiful and as much their own as they can make it - which feels to me like such a perfect metaphor for the entire process of growing up."
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced?
"There are so many pieces to put together in a show like this - the technical complexity has definitely been the biggest challenge! Though I’ve directed many straight plays, this is the first musical I’ve directed, and there’s a whole lot more to incorporate, from music to design to fight choreography. Luckily, I have an amazing group of collaborators at the MTC - including my Music Director, Masa Gibson, as well as a large team of designers, choreographers, musicians, and theatre artists and technicians of all kinds. The results are going to be so much richer for the contributions of all their talents."
Who is your favorite character in the show, and why?
"I ended up finding a little bit of myself in every character, I think - it definitely brought me back to many specific moments in my own teenage years. Melchior’s optimism in the power of his rational mind; Wendla’s desire to understand the world by feeling; Moritz’s see-saw between intense loneliness and an equally intense fear of reaching out to others; Ilse’s bad-ass insistence on doing things her own way - all these and others were places where I really came to feel for these characters."
What do you hope the audience takes away from Spring Awakening?
"I hope that they get a real taste of the thrill and intensity and emotional rollercoaster of being a teenager. I also hope that the story resonates; as we see from the the news every day, there’s still a real and important debate happening about what place sex should have in society. Should teens be educated about sex, or kept in ignorance? Sexuality is certainly a powerful force, both for individuals and in society, but must it necessarily be a destructive force? At the end of the show, the characters are looking forward to the future; every new generation is a new chance to tackle this very human experience."
